Overhead Smash The overhead smash is a deceptively
difficult shot to play because the timing has to be just right. The
motion should be like the service motion but the backswing should be a
lot shorter. Here are a few points to help with your overhead smash:
1. If your opponent has hit a high, deep lob it may be best to let the
ball bounce before attempting the overhead smash. Otherwise, if the lob
is not so deep and high, hitting the
ball on the full will give you the advantage, through taking away your
opponent's time. 2. It's important to
maneuver yourself into a position directly under the ball. Make sure
that you are balanced, with feet shoulder width apart. Turn sideways to
the net. 3. Place the racket behind your head in the
'trophy' pose, just as in a serve. You may want to point to the ball
with your other hand. 4. Keep your head up and eyes fixed on the ball.
Using a short backswing, swing the racket forward in a punching motion.
Make sure you watch the ball right onto the strings.
5. Speed and power are
much less important than placing the ball where your opponent can't
reach it.
