The Lob can be an invaluable weapon. Against an attacking player who
is at the net, a well-placed lob can be the perfect counter-attack, It can also be used when you have been taken out of position and
need time to get back to the centre of the court. Here are some points
to remember: 1. The footwork and backswing for the lob are the same as
for the forehand and backhand drives. Turn sideways to the net, take
your racket back early and swing forward with weight transfer. Lobs can
be disguised as drives. 2. Try
to aim for the baseline. If you hit the lob too short, your opponent
will be able to run back and attempt an overhead smash. The deeper the
lob, the better.
3. Open the face of the racket slightly to give the ball some lift.
Don't slice the ball but rather try to hit through it the ball.
4. A long and high follow through will allow the ball to carry over
your opponent's head and land deep in the court. Follow through as high
as possible.
Note that adding topspin to the lob can make it even more
effective because the ball tends to kick away from your opponent, when
he/she is running back.
