How to Hit a Tennis Forehand

 

The forehand is a relatively easy stroke to pick up and can become a strength for most players. However, overconfidence can lead to players taking their eyes off the ball and losing their forehand technique.

Here are some points for the forehand:

1. Take up the ready position, with feet at the shoulder width. Hold the racket at about waist level directly in front of you. Bend your knees slightly.

2. As soon as you realize that the ball is coming to your forehand side, turn your body sideways to the net. This allows you to, if necessary, run a few steps to reach the ball.

3. Take your racket back early and in a looping motion. Your weight will be on the back foot. Bend your knees to get down to the ball.

4. As you start your forward swing, transfer your weight to the forward foot. Step into the ball.

4. If you are attempting a topspin forehand, the racket head will drop as it comes forward and the the stroke path will from bottom to top. If attempting a forehand drive, the racket as you swing forward will be kept more at the level that you will strike the ball.

5. Watch the ball closely. Hit the ball just ahead of your forward hip or even earlier. Hit the ball flat with the racket near vertical. You should have the feeling of lifting the ball slightly.

6. Let your racket follow through naturally until it finishes across your body on the opposite side.
